Fellow satellite observers:

Greetings! My name is Richard Fredrick and I live in Shawnee, Kansas. My
interest in observing satellites was piqued by my interest in visual
astronomy. I wasn't aware of just how easy satellite observation was until I
saw MIR for several nights around Christmas. I had just stumbled across the
STSPLUS program by David Ransom and was noticing that MIR passed over my
location around sunset. I was surprised that the spacecraft not only went
over at the time it was supposed to, but it was really bright! Needless to
say, I was hooked. I have since visually observed IRAS and TOPEX (it's
tough), but I also enjoy being able to hear the signals from various
satellites on my scanner. This is particularly nice during cloudy weather
and it isn't dependent on the time of sunset or sunrise.

I'm looking forward to hearing of the various techniques that people use to
track down satellites and being able to share my observations with others. I
like having the opportunity of pointing out a satellite or two to fellow
astronomy hobbyists, but letting young people in on the fun is what will
really be enjoyable. If seeing the moon, a comet, galaxies or a satellite
leads them to an interest in science, then we will all benefit in the long run.

Glad to be on board and looking forward to hearing from you.
Richard Fredrick
