Solar filters for binoculars are extremely easy and very cheap to
make from mylar foil rated for solar observation. But you wouldn't
have seen Mir anyway. Its angular size would have been too small, the
picture would have been blurred by atmospheric turbulence, and the
whole event would have been over in a matter of one or two seconds.
However, it might be possible to observe such a transit through a
small telescope and videotape it.
