Hi Ted ( and the others) Nice to see mention of the Baken Nunn camera that was at Olifantsfontein (#9002). Brings back old memories :-)). I remember trying to see the PROJECT SCORE Atlas but never succeeded - cant recall if I had predictions or not - probably not! I actually had the offer of a post of observer with the camera around 1966 and had an interview at the station. Whilst there a satellite launch was in progress - I think it was the OAO-1 satellite and the teleprinter in the station would spring into action every few minutes giving an update of the countdown - no Internet in those days! I did not take the job because there was no pension scheme nor a medical aid scheme - always wondered how my life would have changed had I taken the job! Of course the camera disappeared a long time ago - the Norman (sp?) clock that was used for precise timing ended at the local astronomical society centre - Pretoria branch- and I was offered that free a few years later but never took it because it was so bulky it would have cost a small fortune to move it. Im not sure what happened to the Baker Nunn camera itself but I do know that the HartebeestHoek Radio Astronomical Observatory (HRAO) outside Krugersdorp has a Baker Nunn camera but not sure if its the same one. This used to be one of the Deep Space Radio telescope locations used for planetary missions etc and has an 84 foot dish - I believe its out of action at the moment as one of the polar axis bearings has given up the ghost but its a temporary setback - incidentally was also offered employment there in the late 70's but was already then employed as a professional optical astronomer so turned that down. Cheers from a cloudy Cape Town Greg ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe/Unsubscribe info, Frequently Asked Questions, SeeSat-L archive: http://www.satobs.org/seesat/seesatindex.html
