29 Aug 97, 08:58 UT pass. Range about 1700 km. Limiting magnitude about 13.8. Useful magnitude for seeing Vanguard about 13.0. Used 17 mm eyepiece with 8" scope. Did not see it so I am considering observational error or element set position offsets as possible factors as well as the possible "it was too faint". Ron Lee
