In a message off-list, Dave has provided his site coordinates (which I will not share here, in case he has some need to keep them private). He also reported that he was looking virtually straight up, and that the object was no more than 5 to 10 deg from straight up. Observation time accuracy estimate is 15 min. Heavens-Above reveals MetOp-A (06044A / 29499), culminating at 21:57:02 PDT (2010 Aug 15, 04:57:02 UTC), 83 deg above the eastern horizon. This object is known to flare; there have even been efforts to predict them. Here is a sample of posts to the list: http://www.satobs.org/seesat/Apr-2007/0083.html http://www.satobs.org/seesat/May-2007/0056.html http://www.satobs.org/seesat/May-2009/0136.html I found no other likely candidates within the stated tolerance of the observation. That does not prove it was MetOp A, but seems a good candidate. Ted Molczan _______________________________________________ Seesat-l mailing list http://mailman.satobs.org/mailman/listinfo/seesat-l
