I worked at Kwajalein from 1980-1992 and saw many, many reentries, sitting on the beach. They are indeed "white hot" as seen by me. I also have seen photos taken just prior to impact taken from cameras very close. Most were at night, so I never saw any splash plumes. My wife worked at the photo lab and took a lot of documentary photos similar to the cover photo.
