The Toronto pass of 2002 Dec 02 was to culminate 61 deg in the southeast at 22:29 UTC; however, all afternoon the only blue sky was a 3 deg wide band on the northern horizon, moving south at glacial speed. When it became obvious that the clear sky would not arrive in time, I decided to head north. I was not certain that I would get through the rush hour traffic in time, but 20 minutes before the pass I overtook the trailing edge of the cloud. Three minutes before the pass, I stopped at a nearly vacant parking lot in a town 60 km north of Toronto, and stepped out under a nearly cloudless sky. For five minutes, I watched two brilliant points of light inhabited by humans race across the heavens.
