    The use of fixed-width fonts (or not) will affect the display, but
    will not change the actual underlying column count.  What is a more
    likely culprit is the use of HTML, either in the original email, or in
    the viewer.  HTML will, by default, truncate consecutive, standard
    spaces down to a single space.
    The following bit leads me to believe that your mail client may be
    configured to use HTML email (or at least to display it that way).
    Can you disable that when viewing the email?

    Of course, it could be something completely different, but I would at
    least try a plain-text mode to see if that helps you.
