Chris van den Berg in his latest report notes that Mir will be in "solar
orbit" (remain illuminated by the Sun) starting Jan 1 for about a week.
Sure enough, I didn't notice it before but that what my tracking program
says. Mir starts going into shadow in the extreme southern latitudes on
Jan 5 at around 15:50 UT. 
So if you're in the dark between 60N and 60S, you should be able to see
Mir anytime it is above the horizon ;-)
