To our team's great disappointment, the ATEx tether pair was inadvertantly jettisoned from the STEX spacecraft after deploying only 21 meters. The jettison was triggered by an automatic protection mechanism designed to save the spacecraft if the tether began to stray from it's expected departure angle.
