I have learned that the service interruption at SeeSat-L is the result of a spam attack on our host, of over 100,000 messages per hour. This attack appears to have started on 2003 Jan 13 at about 15:00 UTC. I imagine that some large networks easily handle 100,000 messages per hour of regular mail, but SeeSat-L's host is fairly small. About 12 hours after the attack began, several pieces of mail finally got through, but it appears that the problem may be continuing. This message was sent on 2003 Jan 14 at 14:30 UTC. If you received it within, say, 30 minutes, then service may be back to normal. At this time, I see no reason not to post to SeeSat-L, since the messages seem likely to arrive eventually. Time critical messages should be sent directly to any parties known to need/want timely receipt. This is the first major problem that we have experienced in the 6.5 months with the present host. In the short run, all I can do is to wait this out. If such interruptions were to become a frequent occurrence, then I would find a new a host.
