Hi Paolo Maybe I can answer your question. In the early days of the Space Program the BAA put out a publication called "ARTIFICIAL EARTH SATELLITES", as part of their MEMOIRS OF THE BRITISH ASTRONOMICAL ASSOCIAION, Vol 39 No 2, (Radio-Electronics section) dated 1961 August. This is a 160 page publication of which the first 60 pages deal with the radio tracking of artificial satellites. The second 100 pages comes some useful material with the following chapter headings: VISUAL OBSERVATIONS by R.Eberst NOTES ON TIMING AND THE USE OF STAR CHARTS by K.Fea OPTICAL AIDS TO OBSERVATION by K.Fea SOME COMMENTS ON TELESCOPIC OBSERVATION by J.R.Smith THE TECHNIQUE OF TELESCOPIC OBSERVATION by G.E.Taylor A TELESCOPE OF UNIT MAGNIFICATION AND VERY LARGE FIELD by R.d'E.Atkinson PHOTOGRAPIC TECHNIQUES by T.Lloyd Evans and M.G.Fisher AN INEXPENSIVE CHRONOGRAPH by M.J.Hendrie THE METHOD OF PREDICTING AND THE PREDICTION SERVICE by G.E.Taylor GENERALIZED TRACK CHARTS by K.Fea SOLAR ILLUMINATION by G.E.Taylor SPHERICAL CO-ORDINATE CONVERSION TABLES by Turner,Fea,Heywood,Clarke and Taylor. A lot of the material is now very much dated, although some of it is timeless. I have a copy of the publication. The publication is copyrighted so I guess I cant scan it... however I am sure that most astronomical libraries will have this publication, probably stored with other publications by the BAA. As regards the Satellite Tracking Observing section I cant say much about this as I was not involved with it in any way. My own impression was that it was very low key and not particularly active. However I may be wrong and I am sure that there are others on SeeSat that may be able to contradict my statements.
