If you are willing to pay in the $300-400 range, the Sony ICF-2010 (American name) is a very good radio and a very good deal. It has SSB *and* synchronous detection. In general for picking up amateur broadcasts SSB is a must... by not wasting power on two sidebands and a carrier when only one sideband is needed you can make more efficient use of the radio spectrum. Beat frequency oscillators are a sort of klunky way of picking up SSB... synchronous detection is a lot nicer. Usually you can only get that feature on table top models, though. The Sony ICF-2010 is an exception.
