TWO IRIDIUM SATELLITES WITH HARDWARE FAILURES posted on 7/22/98 at 20:35 UTC by Keith Stein Motorola Satellite Communications announced today that two Iridium satellites have experienced hardware failures in orbit. Iridium "SV 44" and "SV 71" experienced a "hardware failure" and will not be available to participate in the operational constellation. This brings the total number to operational satellites to 65 of the 66 needed to complete the constellation and begin service in September. A total of seven satellites have been taken out of operational service in orbit since the first launch in May 1997.
