I am thinking of emailing the author to ask about whether this applies to Southern Polar regions as well. Any thoughts from the list members on whether this is likely based on the typical shuttle orbit? - as it is a polar summer phenomenon it would obviously depend on a shuttle mission during the Southern Hemisphere summer (which would have included STS-107.) I guess the difficulty would be finding sufficient observers but I guess some of the Antarctic bases might be able to assist if it is likely.
