The synonymy for "common" in Webster's New World Dictionary (highly recommended!) suggests that "vulgar" is nearly ideal for this usage. I use "vulgar name" in hopes of replacing the previous, misleading usage "common name", because as a newbie I spent way too much time struggling, thinking that "common names" were usable. I hope that current newbies will be forwarned by "vulgar name" not to expect too much from "vulgar names". There must have been dozens of messages posted to SeeSat-L expressing various degrees of inconvenience, lost data, and general unhappiness about the sad state of vulgar names. He continues: > The more involved observers will continue to use SeeSat-L. Also hopefully, all the more civil people will do so, and it will grow stronger, not weaker. > I don't have the details at hand, but I'm pretty sure you can get > newsgroups via email if you're interested. I don't have the details either, but I think there is a FAQ floating around news.answers or somewhere with much detail. Cheers.
