The Dayton Daily News reports:

"Federal Aviation Administration investigators examined the charred metallic
chunk and reported Friday that the FAA does not believe it came from an
aircraft, police Maj. Mike Bruck said Monday. Police will ship it to NASA in
Houston this week."

So, apparently it did come from orbit.

In case anyone is curious, I have verified through orbital analysis that this
object could not have originated from space shuttle Columbia.
