    I think I can agree partly with both of you. Of course we need standards,
    and "we" use the IOD format, and there are converters from UK formats.
    But there are other things like star catalogues, satellite magnitude files,
    elset selection files... less standard, and without converters.
    I have not really learnt XML, nor found the tools to work conveniently
    with it, but it seems one of the advantages is that schemas do allow
    fixed tailored output formats to be generated from free-format files.
    (I have made some Google .kml files, which are XML, but only
    using Visual Basic or UltraEdit text editor!)
    
    And in general, designers only fluent in modern tools hardly have the
    means or practice in reading/producing the fixed format files we use.
    This may be a serious obstacle for producing more user-friendly'
    software by younger programmers.
