Hi Paul:

I would be inclined to say that what you saw were chemical releases in near-Earth space from a sounding rocket. However, if you were within 150 km of the launch site, I would have expected you to see the ascent of the rocket.

Sounding rocket launches with chemical releases happen from time to time from White Sands, New Mexico and Wallops Island, Virginia. The releases produce interesting streaks and nebula-like clouds in the sky somewhat similar to those in your photos.
