Just observed the Telstar-5 Proton R/B at 03:46 UT May 31/97; Lat.
49.85N, Long. 97.27W (Winnipeg, Canada).
Based on Alan Pickup's elements:
Telstar 5 Proton r 162 x 155 km
1 24813U 97026B 97151.08021242 .05571377 26669-1 27429-3 0 90356
2 24813 51.5898 111.0988 0005385 287.3265 72.6146 16.42776666 1040
The satellite was observed +/- 15 secs. of its projected time and +/- 5
degrees of its expected track.
Observation was difficult, fairly bright twilight and an interfering
tree and light. Basically it caught me by surprise! Sorry I couldn't
provide a more accurate position and/or timing. But Alan's elements
were more than adequate.
Still flashing, about as bright as Vega (one of the few stars available)
and moving... real fast!
Clear skies...
