Hello, John and All,

After reading all the letters on "Spoutnik 41" (as it is referred to at the
MIR news link from the VSOP page) I looked at the pass info for MIR for
Phoenix, Arizona last night and saw that it would make a nice zenith pass
this morning.

I got outside and turned on the radio at 6:00 am MST. MIR wasn't due for
another 4 minutes, but as soon as I turned on the radio, I heard the
"beeps" and then the voice announcements. I listened to the radio and
watched MIR. It seemed I lost the voice at least two minutes before MIR
culmination at 6:06 MST. I heard at least three voice transmissions, in
Russian, French and English but could not make out clearly the English
ones.

The radio I used is a Radio Shack HTX-202 handy talkie with a quarter wave
mobile antenna. Which is to say it doesn't take much to hear the thing.
Though I couldn't see Spoutnik 41, it was exciting to listen to it, and
watch it's parent coast into the early Arizona sky.

I would gather that the little thing is probably running on batteries, I
hope you all get to hear it before it goes dark forever.

I realize that radio, per se, is off topic for this list. Nevertheless,
radio observations can be a great aide to visual observations. Afterall,
isn't the difference between "visual" and "radio" wavelength? I believe
the trick is to keep it to "observations" and not an endless discussion of
equipment.

Cheers,
Rick Yost
