    Dear Justin,

I'd start off with a SciAm article by C.L. Strong from Januar 1958 & May 1974 reprinted in a collection by Shawn Carlson in ISBN 978-0-471-38282-9

For a more scientific apporach I'd continue with the "Satellite Times" pages by T.S. Kelso and the with the "SpaceTrack Report No 3" by Hoots/Roehrich/Kelso. Especially get into celestial coordinate systems used and try to understand why which corrective term is included into the basic formulae given in the "Satellite times" to result in the first really usable prediction program "SGP". Feel free to play around with the Fortran programs given there and e.g. compare the difficult precisions using the sample calculations.

Use the help of the literature quoted in the "SpaceTrack Report N3" or the work of Oliver Montenbruck, e.g. in ISBN 978-0-387-50704-0, 978-354-0-67280-7 or 978-354-0-78521-7, or, for a more advanced understanding especially when dealing with objects in the lower atmosphere, the work of Desmond King-Hele: ISBN 978-0-216-92252-5

    Kind Regards,
    J.
