Good Morning:

Misperceived missile launches is a continuing issue here in southern California. In addition to missile launches being perceived as UFOs, high altitude jet contrails are sometimes misidentified as rocket or missile launches from Vandenberg AFB.

The most notable example of the latter was the supposed unidentified missile launch off of the southern California coast five years ago (http://www.spacearchive.info/news-2010-11-13-bw.htm).

I have long thought about posting a web page on how to tell the difference between an aircraft contrail and a Vandenberg launch. However, I have never gotten around to doing it.

Regards,

Brian Webb
