For my own records I record here that I have solved why ALL SKY PLATE
SOLVER does not show a JPG image when converted to a FITS file as I was
doing it.

After some fiddling I found that the JPG image when saved as a FITS file
has to be converted to a monochrome image first. Unless this is done the
JPG image saved as a FITS file will have NAXIS = 3 ( in the FITS HEADER)
which signifies a colour image even though the original image was captured
with a monochrome sensor..

Converting the JPG image to a monochrome FITS image results in NAXIS =2
(in the FITS HEADER) and then ALL SKY PLATE SOLVER will display the image
after it has been plate solved.

This now removes the need for NOVA.ASTROMETRY.NET (and thus an internet
connection) and Astro ImageJ and thus will speed up matters.
Thinking ahead I think I can now automate much of the measuring procedure
involved.

I recount my experiences here as it may assist others in their method of
attack.
