    ...the USSR was engaged in launching a series of lunar probes using a
    version of the Vostok booster. I was wondering whether the nose
    fairing was discarded during ascent or went into space along with the
    upper (second) stage and the payload. On those launches that were
    succesful, of course. Cannot find anything about a nose fairing for
    those launches on the Internet, but did find a photo of what might be
    the Luna probe booster---and the fairing appears to be a single unit.
    I would have thought they would have designed a two-piece throwaway
    fairing by then. Why carry the extra weight any farther than you have
    to?
