Actually thinking about it, we may well see six digit numbers appearing 
within a few years time. As soon as the new S-band "fence"  becomes 
operational we will have a major increase in sensitivity ( something 
like 10x? ) which means a lot of the debris not  now trackable will 
become trackable.

Already  the TLE system allows six digits although some/most(?) 
prediction programs do not read six digits and only the last five 
-probably because the original system was developed using fortran ?

I would guess that SPACETRACK  is probably already using a six digit 
system for the debris that does not appear in the SPACETRACK catalog ?
