The Strategic Defense Initiative Organization was disbanded a few years
back and most of
the research was shifted over to the U.S. Army.

The U.S. has had a continuous Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) research
program since
the late 1950's (BMD is interested in defense again short-, intermediate-,
and long-range
missiles). Although many people believe that President Clinton halted the
SDI program,
he merely reorganized the U.S. BMD effort and shifted it back to the Army,
where it has
traditionally resided.

By the way, I've personally witnessed two BMD launches from Vandenberg AFB
(one in
January in late June). There's another BMD-related launch from Vandenberg
in January
1998.
