Bjoern Gimle proposed three candidates for the "trio" I observed crossing ahead of USA 40 r at about 10:06 UT, but said that they crossed *behind* and not *ahead* of USA 40 r. I went back and listened to my tape and indeed, the starting time, using a stopwatch is exactly a minute later than I calculated from WWV. My only explanation is that my WWV checkpoint was at 5:03:01.00 and I wrote down 5:02:01.00. Thus the corrected data show the same numbers as before except that the times are advanced by exactly one minute. This places the satellite only 35 seconds behind prediction, Bjoern's requirement for the relative positions of the three candidates and USA 40r is satisfied, my recording of the sighting shows where the original mistake is, and my writing down of the WWV time shows when the crime was committed! Residuals are around -0.03 for RA and Dec. 20344 89 061D 8333 E 20000930100134740 27 25 0433960+162278 48 S+070 10 20344 89 061D 8333 E 20000930100258050 27 25 0448875+211992 48 S+070 10 20344 89 061D 8333 E 20000930100715370 27 25 0600357+395053 48 S+080 10 Many thanks to Bjoern for catching this! Apologies to everyone for the mistake.
