Oh, that's terrible news. I first met Max at the Royal Greenwich Observatory when I was a pre-university intern there in 1978. He was a mentor to me in those early days and I always enjoyed running into him in later years, albeit far too infrequently - I think I last saw him at the Geoff Perry memorial in around 2000. I was glad to see that he retained his youthful enthusiasm !
