A new tether satellite will be launched sometime this year. I been waiting for this satellite for over a year. It keeps being delayed because of various reasons. It might be launched in Nov, along with a gps satellite. On the following site http://www.spaceandtech.com/spacedata/logs/2002/proseds_sumpub.shtml It says the following ProSEDS will deploy from a Delta-II second stage a 5 km (2.7 nmi) long, ultra-thin bare-wire tether connected with a 10 km (5.4 nmi) long non-conducting tether made of Kevlar and Spectra. It will use that spectra material, the stufff used in tips. It isn't planned to stay in orbit for to long of a period.
