Observing NEAR during the Earth swingby - Sunglints and other times

A map of the path of the NEAR Sunglint is not yet on the NEAR Web
site, but is planned to be put up there later today. A Universal Time
version was posted on the two IOTA Web sites over the weekend, and a
local-time version has been prepared (with many of the city errors in
the U.T. version corrected) and will be posted on the NEAR site later
today, possibly sooner at the IOTA anomalies.com site. A similar
schedule applies to basic sky views for the following ten regions:

Area for sky chart Local time

New York and New England 1:24- 1:27 am EST Jan. 23
Midwest 12:26-12:29 am CST Jan. 23
Colorado & northern New Mex. 11:27-11:29 pm MST Jan. 22
Mid-Atlantic States 1:29- 1:31 am EST Jan. 23 (& maybe 1:25)
Georgia, Florida, & Carolinas 1:30- 1:35 am EST Jan. 23
Texas and Louisiana 12:36-12:39 am CST Jan. 23
southern New Mex. & Arizona 11:39 pm MST Jan. 22 (these two lines
n. Ariz., Utah, s.e. Idaho 11:41-11:44 pm MST Jan. 22 have one chart)
California and Nevada 10:39-10:45 pm PST Jan. 22
Pacific Northwest 10:45-10:48 pm PST Jan. 22
Maui and Oahu, Hawaii 8:48- 8:49 pm HST Jan. 22

The time for any location can be determined more accurately from the
maps mentioned above. The U.T. hour is the same for all locations: 6h
of Jan. 23. The ten basic sky charts have labelled only Capella, NEAR,
and the Seven Sisters (Pleiades) star cluster. Constellations and
several other stars are identified on the Eastern U.S. and Western U.S.
sky charts on the NEAR Web site (get to them by clicking on "Get ready
for Earth Swingby" in the upper right, and then on "Sunglint
maneuvers"). Also there is a chart of Perseus, with north up, showing
in more detail the location of NEAR during the Sunglint maneuvers for
almost 40 cities; it will help those using large binoculars or
telescopes which, however, are not necessary; the glint should be easily
visible with the naked eye. Note that the Sunglint maneuvers are
performed only by rotating the spacecraft slightly using momentum
wheels, powered by the ample electricity available from the solar
panels; there are no thrusting maneuvers using the spacecraft's fuel to
accomplish these pointings.

The magnitude of the Sunglint can be calculated fairly well,
knowing the 8.92 square meters of the solar panels and the fact that 89%
of the sunlight that falls on them is absorbed (so 11% of the light is
assumed to be specularly reflected). This gives mag. 0.0 at 6:24 U.T.
(1:24 am EST) and mag. -1.3 at 6:49 U.T. (8:49 pm HST). But the actual
magnitude may be a little fainter since the minimum distance from NEAR
to the Earth's surface is used, while the actual slant range to the
areas that the Sunglint illuminates is greater. Even if only one of the
four solar panels produces a glint at your location, it will be 1.5 mag.
fainter than the full glint with all four panels, still very bright (2nd
or 1st magnitude) and easy to see without optical aid. Since the solar
panels may be misaligned slightly, the Sunglint could occur in steps as
more panels catch sunlight. Timings of these steps to a few tenths of a
second will be valuable to measure the misalignments, information that
will be useful for calculating solar radiation pressure forces on the
spacecraft in the weak gravity field of Eros.

Much less certain is how bright NEAR will be when it is not
"glinting". After launch in Feb. 1996, Spacewatch detected NEAR at 20th
mag. at a distance of 300,000 km. But at that time, NEAR was departing
at a Solar elongation of almost 90 deg. and the solar panels were kept
pointing at the Sun, so that almost all of the spacecraft presented to
the Earth would have been in shadow. By comparison, at that distance,
the Sunglint would be 6th mag.! During the approach during the next few
days, the geometry is much more favorable, with a phase angle of about
40 deg., so at least the 1.5-meter white parabolic high-gain antenna
should give a rather good diffuse reflection. I estimate that NEAR will
be about 5 magnitudes brighter than when it departed, or about 5000
times fainter than the Sunglint situation. I have used that assumption
for computing the magnitude in the geocentric table of NEAR given below,
starting at 3 hr. intervals and decreasing as the distance decreases.
Any magnitude estimates, even approximate, that could be made with large
telescopes before Jan. 22.5 U.T. would be valuable for adjusting this
table and therefore most welcome; I will distribute an updated version
as soon as any observations are received. Note that AFTER the swingby,
NEAR's declination will remain near -71 deg., visible only from Southern
Hemisphere observatories, and will likely be a few magnitudes fainter
than the magnitudes listed due to the unfavorable departure Solar
elongation, similar to that for NEAR's departure after launch in 1996.
The Sunglint magnitude is given during the Sunglint maneuvers on Jan. 23
U.T. from 6:22 to 6:50 U.T.

NEAR's parallax is already 0.2 deg. at 1.8 million km distance,
and this will increase as it approaches, to well over 10 deg. during the
Sunglint maneuvers. I can provide topocentric ephemerides upon request
to those with large telescopes who plan early observations. I will also
try to process such requests for those with medium and small telescopes
as time permits, but to help that, we are working with the Minor Planet
Center at the Harvard Center for Astrophysics to allow Web users to
generate their own topocentric ephemeris by specifying their
geographical coordinates and a specified time range and interval. They
have done this in the past with asteroids that pass very close to the
Earth. The Web site will be distributed as soon as it is ready. In the
meantime, I will also generate some topocentric ephemerides and sky
charts to post on the NEAR, and possibly IOTA, Web sites as time
permits. Specific requests can be sent to me here, but from 15h U.T. to
25h U.T. (that is, 1h U.T. of the next date), you should instead send
your request to: David.Dunham@jhuapl.edu (or send to both this address
and that one near 15h or 1h U.T.).
