Ted, I'm not sure if you've tried this, but there is an online service that will identify stars in images 'automagically'. You can submit pics to the flickr astrometry group here: http://flickr.com/groups/astrometry, you can email them to use their web site, or you can build the software yourself. You may have to scrub out the sat trail. Main site: http://astrometry.net How-To: http://astrometry.net/use.html Flickr group: http://flickr.com/groups/astrometry If all else fails, let me know and I'll try to install the sfw and run your image thru - I didn't want to do it without your permission. -- David Tiller Lead Consultant/Architect | CapTech (804) 304-0638 | dtiller@captechconsulting.com ________________________________________ From: seesat-l-bounces+dtiller=captechconsulting.com@satobs.org [seesat-l-bounces+dtiller=captechconsulting.com@satobs.org] on behalf of Ted Molczan [ssl3molcz@rogers.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 19, 2011 12:47 AM To: seesat-l@satobs.org Subject: Seeking identification of stars in photo I would be grateful for assistance in identifying at least one of the stars in this photo: http://aswa.info/images/sputnik.jpg The photo reportedly is of Sputnik 1's rocket body, photographed from Perth, Australia, on 1957 Oct 09 UTC. I have an accurate orbit for around that date, which seems not to pass any of the stars in the photo, which leads me to suspect that the date and/or satellite's identity is incorrect.
