I've been able to see pictures in 3D without a viewer for most of my life. I started practicing with astronomy book pictures while I was in grade school. Didn't know anyone else did it. I've also taken 3D pictures. I had a note in SKY & TELESCOPE a while ago saying that some side by side Jupiter pictures in the magazine gave a very nice 3D affect. Try looking for this anytime similar photos appear. A few days ago I picked up a 100 year old stereo card showing the moon.
