Jonathan - I am well aware of the merits of journals since I have been publishing astronomical research in the best of them for more than 50 years. As I mentioned in my earlier reply to Marco, though, satellite research should be published more speedily than journals allow. Marco - The original intent of arXiv may have been as a ‘preprint server’ as you stated. However, it is now much more than that.
