David,

Jay Respler and I determined ‘characteristic magnitudes’ for all three
models of Starlink Generation 1 satellites. They range from 4.7 for the
Original Design to 6.2 for VisorSats. This is the URL for the research
paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.17268.

SpaceX is using a special material on their Generation 2 satellites to
reflect sunlight away from observers on the ground. They also intend to
orient the spacecraft bodies and their solar panels to reduce brightness
once they are on-station.

I am collecting observations in order to evaluate how well their approach
to brightness mitigation for Gen 2 is working. Please contact me by email
if you need additional information.

Best regards,

Tony Mallama
