I looked at the photo you link to below. Thank you for posting it.
How about this for a theory. The lines are actually an image from a
tracking reticle installed on the telescope used to take the picture. I
don't know that much about them, but I have seen them in the catalogs I get
from Orion. Here is how Orion describes their 12mm Illuminated Kellner
Steering Guide:
12mm Kellner, Cabled
Orion's 12mm Illuminated Reticle eyepiece features a double crossline
reticle that allows positioning of a star image either in the central square
or on the intersection of any two lines. Unlike models that use light bulbs,
our night-vision red LED will never burn out or require replacement. Nor
will your wallet, because the price is very reasonable! (emphasis mine).
